March 2014 – PhD Cambridge University UK

Professor at the School of Education, Faculty of Education and Diversity, University of Iceland.

My initial career started as a teacher of mathematics and drama for four years in rural North Iceland. I began this journey as a teacher  in secondary education at the age of 19, immediately after graduating from Menntaskólinn á Akureyri (Junior College) in 1992. Following my higher education in Teacher Education, I continued teaching for an additional two years.

My teaching experience led me to a second career, specializing in the Sociology of Education. During my teacher education, I gained hands-on experience by teaching in urban and rural schools, which presented diverse social contexts and varying outcomes in student achievement, particularly among boys. I completed an MA degree in Gender and Education with honors from the University of Iceland that included coursework at the University of London (UCL), further enriching my academic background and providing a broader international perspective.

Immediately after graduating with my MA, I embarked on my third career in Comparative Education Policy and Governance. I worked for four years in governance roles. My first administrative role in governance was as an Equal Opportunity Officer at the University of Iceland. I left this position to pursue my PhD studies, which began in Iceland, continued at Cornell University in the US, and concluded at Cambridge University in the UK.  My PhD at Cambridge University concentrated on educational reforms directed towards making the school more equitable for different groups of students. My second administrative role was serving as a Special Adviser to the Minister of Education, Science, and Culture in Iceland during 2009-2011.

In 2013 right after my defence of my PhD, I commenced my role as an Assistant Professor at the University of Iceland. Since then, my research has evolved in three distinct directions: Sociology of Education, Politics of Education, and Sociology of Love.

Here you can see the research projects I lead.
